Rootstock: Celebrating Halton’s Diverse Communities

A welcoming programme of free creative workshops is coming to Runcorn and Widnes, helping local people discover, celebrate and connect through culture.

Trinity Safe Space is inviting people across Halton to take part in Rootstock, a vibrant new series of creative workshops celebrating the rich diversity, heritage and stories that make up our local community.

Funded through Culture 26, Made in Halton, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and the Metro Mayor, the programme will bring people together in venues across Runcorn and Widnes to explore the many cultures and backgrounds that have helped shape the borough.

Many local families have Irish, Welsh, Polish and Lithuanian roots, linked to Halton’s industrial past. Rootstock will also shine a light on residents with connections to places including Bulgaria, Hungary, Spain, Africa and the Middle East — and perhaps even a Viking or two!

The free workshops will use visual art, crafts, music, photography and creative activities to celebrate heritage and identity. Participants will be encouraged to share ideas inspired by traditional dress, food, textiles, transport, landscapes, trades and more.

The first taster session takes place on Tuesday 21 July, from 2pm to 4pm, at The Studio, Lacey Street, Widnes, WA8 7SQ.

Further sessions will be held at the same venue and time on 1, 8 and 29 September, and 6, 13, 20 and 27 October. Sessions in Runcorn will follow in September and October, with dates to be confirmed.

There is no need to book — people can simply turn up on the day. The workshops are free of charge and open to participants aged 16 and over.

Alongside the workshops, Trinity Safe Space is also planning a series of world music events and a Ceilidh, with more announcements coming soon. The first event is an African music gig with Amani Creatives at The Studio on Thursday 24 July at 7pm. Tickets are £5 each and are available through Eventbrite by searching for “Celebration of African Music with Amani Creatives”.
