New Professional Resource Hub Launched to Support Children and Young People at Risk of Self-Harm

Professionals working with children and young people across Cheshire and Merseyside now have access to a new resource designed to improve confidence and knowledge when supporting those at risk of self-harm.

The Cheshire & Merseyside CYP Self-Harm Professional Resource Hub has been launched to provide practical, evidence-based guidance for staff and volunteers who may not have specialist mental health training but are often in a position to identify and support children and young people experiencing emotional distress.

Self-harm continues to be a significant concern across the region, with hospital admissions for self-harm among 10 to 24-year-olds reported to be higher than the national average. The new hub has been developed to help professionals recognise self-harm behaviours, respond appropriately, and support children and young people to stay safe.

The online resource includes:

  • Information to help professionals recognise and understand self-harm behaviours.
  • Expert advice on having supportive conversations with children, young people and families.
  • Evidence-based tools for assessing risk and developing safety plans.
  • Practical strategies to help manage urges to self-harm.
  • Guidance on responding to children and young people in crisis.
  • Links to trusted support services and resources for professionals, families and young people.

In addition to the online content, users can access a downloadable PDF version of the resource hub and a printable quick-reference poster, making it easier to share information and provide support within schools, community organisations, healthcare settings and voluntary sector services.

The hub has been developed to equip professionals with accessible, actionable guidance, helping ensure that children and young people receive timely and informed support when they need it most.
