Home-Start St Helens has marked a remarkable milestone this year, proudly celebrating the honour of receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest recognition a local voluntary group can achieve in the UK. This accolade reflects the unwavering dedication of the organisation’s volunteers, who provide vital emotional and practical support to families across the borough.
The achievement was first recognised earlier in the year at a special civic ceremony held at St Helens Town Hall, where dignitaries gathered to celebrate the charity’s contribution to the community. The award was formally presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mr Peter Oliver OBE, who praised the organisation’s long-standing commitment to strengthening families and improving outcomes for children.
Adding to the excitement, Home-Start St Helens was invited to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace earlier this month. Representatives from the service enjoyed a memorable day in the palace grounds, joining fellow award recipients and distinguished guests in recognition of their exceptional voluntary work.
At the heart of Home-Start St Helens is a dedicated team of volunteers who bring their own lived experience, compassion, and understanding to families who need a helping hand. Each week, volunteers visit families offering practical and emotional support alongside encouragement which empowers parents whilst building their confidence, strengthening relationships, and creating nurturing home environments.
Annmarie Houghton Chief Executive Officer at Home-Start St. Helens said:
“Receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service is an extraordinary honour and a testament to the dedication, compassion, and resilience of our volunteers. Every week, they step into the lives of families who need a little extra support and offer kindness, understanding, and hope.
Being invited to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace was a truly unforgettable experience for our team, and it reflects the national recognition of the life‑changing work happening here in St Helens.
We are incredibly proud of our volunteers, and we welcome anyone who feels they can give their time, their experience, and their heart to join us. Together, we can continue making a meaningful difference for families across our community.”
