Local women’s organisations, community groups and partners are inviting people across Halton to come together in Widnes this September for a powerful Reclaim the Night walk, calling for safer streets and an end to violence against women and girls.
The Reclaim the Night event will take place on Friday 25 September, with participants meeting at the bandstand in Victoria Park, Widnes, at 6pm.
Organised by Fortuna Female Society, the event will bring people together to walk one lap around Victoria Park, before returning to the bandstand for speeches and inspiring words.
The theme for this year’s event is:
“Walk with us to… RECLAIM THE NIGHT”
The event aims to raise awareness of violence against women and girls, promote safer streets and send a clear message that everyone should be able to enjoy public spaces without fear.
The evening will begin with a meeting at the bandstand at 6pm, followed by an empowering warm-up at 6.30pm before participants set off for the walk.
At the end of the walk, participants will return to the bandstand for speeches and messages of support.
Laura Bevan, Chair of Fortuna Female Society, said:
“Reclaim the Night is about coming together and making it clear that everyone has the right to feel safe when they are out in our communities, whatever the time of day or night.
“Women and girls should not have to change the way they live their lives because they are worried about violence, harassment or feeling unsafe. We want this event to be a positive and powerful demonstration that we will not accept that as the norm.
“This isn't just an issue for women. Creating safer streets and communities is something we all have a role in. We want people to walk with us, stand with us and help us send a strong message that everyone deserves to feel safe.
“We hope people from across Halton will join us at Victoria Park. Come along, bring your friends and family, and help us reclaim the night.”
The event is being supported by a range of local organisations and partners, including Halton & St Helens Voluntary and Community Action (VCA), Victoria Park Environment Team, Halton Borough Council, Cheshire Police & Crime Commissioner, Runcorn Women's Institute and Esposito’s.
The event also provides an opportunity to recognise the work taking place locally to challenge violence against women and girls and to encourage everyone to play their part in creating safer communities.
The Reclaim the Night movement has a long history of bringing people together to challenge violence against women and assert the right of women and girls to use public spaces without fear.
A recent local account of the 2025 Widnes event highlighted the involvement of community organisations, the Halton Domestic Abuse Team and Fortuna Female Society in bringing people together around these issues.
