Halton Trading Standards is urging consumers to remain vigilant when booking holiday accommodation. They have received recent reports of fraudulent holiday property listings falsely claiming to be located in England and world-wide. These scams are often promoted through social media adverts or professional‑looking websites, making them increasingly difficult to spot.
Common warning signs include:
- Accommodation advertised as unique or luxury at prices that seem unusually low
- Limited, vague, or unclear location details
- A lack of genuine, verifiable reviews on recognised booking platforms
- Limited information available about the accommodation host and or the seller/agent
- Requests for payment via bank transfer or pressure to make quick payments
- Websites or social media listings that suddenly disappear or are frequently changed
Unfortunately, these types of scams are becoming more prevalent, and the use of AI technologies can make fraudulent listings appear highly convincing. They are asking all visitors booking accommodation in the Keswick area and surrounding regions to take extra care and verify that a property is legitimate before making any payments.
To stay safe when booking:
- Use reputable accommodation providers or trusted booking platforms
- Pay by credit or debit card wherever possible, as this offers greater protection
- Double‑check property details by doing lots of research before completing a booking
