ESOL English Classes & Conversation Club
English classes and themed conversation aimed at speakers of other languages than English. The aim is to help immigrants with integration into English society. The main complaint we see in the education system is that immigrants do not get enough time in the colleges to immerse themselves in the language. Difficulties arise when dealing with everyday situations such as the doctor, school, form-filling, telephone enquiries, etc. Also, understanding local dialects, customs and culture requires adaptation and education in many things the local population take for granted. Many learners can find the formal, exam-driven environment of the college overwhelming and need a place where they can develop in a more relaxed atmosphere. This activity is supplementary to college work, but no less focussed on bringing the learners up to the standard they need to achieve to progress with their work or educational goals. We meet every Monday and Friday at the Holy Cross Parish Hall on Corporation Street in the town centre, next door to Holy Cross Parish Church at 09.30 to 11.30. The activity is free of charge, tea and coffee provided and mothers with small children are welcome. Contact: Anthony Holland, Whatsapp 07379 026055.
