Five years ago, Wonder Arts bid farewell to The Citadel Arts Centre. It was the end of an era - but also the beginning of something extraordinary; with a bold mission: to bring world-class arts and cultural experiences right to the doorsteps of families in St Helens. That meant saying goodbye to theatre walls & ticket windows and hello to libraries, parks, high streets, and surprise performances in the most unexpected places.

To mark five years of local magic, they're proud to launch the Wonder Town programme.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s around the corner:

  • 29th & 30th November - Magical Festive Weekend  - 2 wondeful festive shows coming to St Mary's Market, St Helens.

St Helens Concert Band Offer Free Christmas Concert

St Helens Concert Band has funding to put on a christmas concert for a local community or charity in St Helens or Halton on an evening or Sunday afternoon.

If you can provide the hall and do the ticketing (your group keeps all the proceeds), and also provide 25 seats for the band  - they will do the rest.

They are a 25 strong band and take up a fair bit of space, so a small hall may not be big enough, but they are very happy to discuss this.

If you think they can help you with a christmas concert to raise funds please get in touch

Laura Beechey

A Fond Farewell and Exciting New Beginning

We’re bidding a heartfelt farewell to our brilliant colleague, Laura Beechey, who has recently left her role as Senior Development Officer to take on an exciting new opportunity as Improvement, Innovation and Transformation Lead at St Rocco’s Hospice.

Laura has been a driving force in our organisation, known for her unwavering commitment to helping those with ideas – create meaningful organisations and services in our community.  Her work has been instrumental in supporting organisations to set up and establish themselves, helping them grow in ways that truly serve local people.

One of Laura’s most inspiring legacies is her leadership in creating and nurturing the Compassionate Communities Network—a collaborative initiative that brought together partners and services to build a more caring and connected Halton for those at end of life.

She also played a key role in launching and growing the Bereavement Café, a safe and welcoming space for people to come together, share experiences, and support one another through grief. The café has become a valued part of the community, thanks to Laura’s vision and dedication.

Her new role at St Rocco’s Hospice is a natural next step, where she’ll continue to lead transformational work that improves lives. We know she’ll bring the same compassion, creativity, and collaborative spirit to her new team.

Congratulations, Laura! You leave behind a legacy of kindness, innovation, and community impact. We’re proud of everything you’ve achieved and excited to see what you’ll accomplish next.

Janet Roberts

Farewell Celebration for Janet Roberts

After more than 25 years of dedicated service to the Voluntary and Community Sector, our wonderful colleague Janet Roberts is retiring on 31st October.

Throughout her career, Janet has made an incredible impact across Halton and St Helens, working on many programmes and projects including Volunteer Centre Halton, Healthwatch St Helens and Community Health Champions.  Her skills have been utilised across a myriad of roles —from community development and training, to advocacy, engagement, and most recently as one of our much-loved Family Connectors in Halton Lea. Her passion, commitment, and warmth have touched the lives of so many.

To celebrate Janet and wish her well on her next chapter, we’re having “a bit of a do” on:

Wednesday 22nd October

From 4pm

St Marie’s, Lugsdale Road, Widnes, WA8 6DB

We warmly invite all partners, colleagues, and friends of Janet to join us in giving her the send-off she truly deserves.

Please let Claire Redford-Kerr know by emailing credford-kerr@haltonsthelensvca.org.uk if you are able to attend or would like to pass on your best wishes.
